Maputo Elephant Reserve

Maputo Elephant Reserve is a misleading name. We saw no elephants during the 4 days we were there and we drove around most of the park.

Although we were told by a guard there are about 150 on site (most were killed/poached during the war) we never saw one or any evidence of the four legged grey trumpeters.

However, don't come for the elephants. Come for the huge empty white sand beach (providing you don't go during a South African holiday), the basic but wild camping right in a thicket next to the sea, the complete lack of any facilities except a well and a 'shop' in a local village that sells soap and soft drinks and not much else.

You can walk for miles along the beach and feel at the end of the world, cook dinner on a wood fire under the stars and pull your washing water up from the well (if you're strong enough…if not one of the very helpful guards will do it for you).

There aren't many signposts and only a smattering of people live in the park (and most only seem to speak native languages) so leave at least 3 hours of daylight from the entrance…it should only take 1-1.5.

Strong 4x4 and complete self catering equipment, including water, are essential.

Entrance fees and camping fees are very reasonable.
