Martial Heights is a beautifully laid out lodge in the Velgewonden Game Reserve, which is an easy three-hour drive from Johannesburg.
With its 10 luxurious glass fronted chalets that look out onto the bush, intimate feel and homely, delicious (and distinctly British) cuisine this is, as game lodges of this standard go, a bargain not to be missed if you are looking for some serious relaxation and great game viewing. Recently taken over by new management in November, Martial heights feels very well cared for and maintained.
Most thatched chalets have brisk outdoor showers, cosy outdoor Jacuzzis and ours (Lion) had a beautifully incorporated freestanding bath in the bedroom. Waking up to the sunrise we saw Zebras meandering on the plains.
It’s the small touches that I love in a place like this; sherry on arrival, a turndown service with an after dinner chocolate on the bed, constant supply of muffins and tea, and very affordable and delicious wine. The staff, all delightful, strike the right balance of attentiveness and privacy.
Highly recommended for a long weekend of relaxing by the pool, stuffing oneself and going for breathtaking game drives!
